Jennifer, I’ll next week be presenting to a group of rural medical providers about how to best provide care to trans folk, and I’d love to use the anecdote you relate above! We have the WPATH standards of care but so many well-intentioned (and some not-so-well-meaning) providers still operate under gender-binary biases. My advice: despite the invasive nature and COST (monetary and emotional), trans folk running the various medical gatekeeping processes (much worse in the UK than in the US) should get a psych eval by a qualified and trained psychologist/psychiatrist. There’s little “nay” a recalcitrant medical provider can say in the face of that evidence that speaks for the need for affirming medical care for the trans patient. Thank you for contributing here! ❤
